Just saw a couple things these past couple days that made me smile.
I walked into our local IGA just the other day, and I saw a guy standing there with a Leafs shirt on. Toronto Maple Leafs. I didn't say anything to him about cheering for the Maple Laughs. I just smiled and walked on. Being a Leafs fan, I doubt he even knows what the Stanley Cup looks like. I'll bet if I held up three flashcards, one with a picture of the Cup, one with a duck and one with the Batman symbol, he wouldn't be able to choose the Cup. Hey, I'd even give him three chances but he'd probably pick the duck twice.
And the other thing...I was watching TV and I saw an ad for a new show being shown this Friday night...guess what it was? Corner Gas! Can you believe it? Crazy, I know. Aussies don't even know what a redneck is, so I doubt this will be a big hit...but I'll watch it if I can.
And...another thing, I just remembered, I was talking to a guy the other day at work, and he had the most obvious thickest Canadian accent. I mean, you could've mistaken him for Doug Mackenzie. I half expected a "Take off, eh?" or "Pass me the two four, hosehead" from him. He was actually from a little town called Natal, in the Crows Nest Pass, which is now defunct and has been amalgamated with the hip and happening town of Sparwood, a whole 3000 member population. But he's been here 30 years...hasn't lost a bit of his accent. I'll bet HE'LL be watching Corner Gas.
Its good to know there are a few Canadian touches over here every now and then...

Your uncle Gary should be reading your blog... he is a die hard Leafs fan... and needs to be awaken! Great call on the flashcards too! I think he might choose the Batman symbol twice.
Wow ... I don't even think people in Ontario 'get' Corner Gas ... because it's set outside the "Centre of the Universe." You have to have travelled to exotic locations like Moose Jaw to understand the humour! And I've never seen an episode where it's -40C -- it's always summer in Dog River, and we know that just isn't true!
Corner Gas is great! Quintessentially Western Canadian. It does require some Saska-bush experience to fully get the humour. Ask Poppa and Grandma for translation tips! I'll expect a review in this space shortly. Waiting and waiting...I know that feeling well. Soon and very soon...and STOP ASKING ME WHEN! I recommend vacuuming. That's what I was doing in our 2 bedroom apartment on Mother's Day, May 1988. Chantel was late...Mother's Day was here, and no baby. I couldn't bear one more little old lady saying, "when are you going to have that baby?" like I had that information handy, and "what are you still doing here?" like I had somewhere better to go. Cheer up! You'll be changing mustard diapers before you know it. Love you two!
